At Santa Fe Mobile MD, we are committed to providing comprehensive, convenient, and proactive healthcare to our community. We are excited to announce a new addition to our services: in-home Zoledronic Acid (Reclast) infusions for the treatment of osteoporosis. This new offering underscores our commitment to bringing vital medical treatments directly to you, in the comfort and safety of your own home.

The Silent Threat of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease” because it can progress without any symptoms until a bone is broken. It is a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle, so fragile that even a minor fall or mild stresses such as bending over or coughing can cause a fracture. You can learn more about the condition from authoritative sources like the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation.

These fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist, or spine and can lead to chronic pain, disability, and a decreased quality of life. The risk of osteoporosis increases with age, and it disproportionately affects women, especially after menopause when the protective effects of estrogen are diminished. However, men are also at risk. Because you can’t feel your bones weakening, screening is crucial for early detection and prevention.

The Importance of Screening and Treatment

The first step in fighting osteoporosis is understanding your risk. We recommend regular screening for at-risk individuals, which typically involves a simple, painless bone density test called a DEXA scan. This aligns with recommendations from leading health organizations, including the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), which emphasizes screening to prevent fractures in older adults. This scan can diagnose osteoporosis before a fracture occurs, allowing for early intervention.

If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, starting treatment is the most effective way to prevent future fractures. While lifestyle changes like diet and exercise are important, medications are often necessary to significantly reduce fracture risk.

A Powerful, Convenient Treatment Option: Zoledronic Acid (Reclast)

We are proud to now offer Zoledronic Acid, also known by the brand name Reclast, as a key component of our osteoporosis treatment program. Zoledronic acid is a highly effective medication that works by slowing down the cells that break down bone, allowing your body to rebuild bone density and strength.

Its effectiveness was firmly established in major clinical studies, such as the landmark HORIZON Pivotal Fracture Trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This study showed that a once-yearly infusion significantly reduces the risk of hip, vertebral, and other non-spine fractures in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. The convenience of a once-yearly, 30-45 minute infusion offers a hassle-free alternative to daily or weekly pills.

Treatment in the Comfort of Your Home

Staying true to our mobile model, we bring this essential treatment to you. A Santa Fe Mobile MD provider will come to your home to administer the Zoledronic Acid infusion. Our in-home service eliminates the need to travel to a hospital or infusion center, making it a stress-free and convenient experience. The cost for the in-home Zoledronic Acid infusion is $473.

Getting Started: Pre-Infusion Labs

To ensure the treatment is safe and effective for you, we require simple lab tests to be completed within 30 days prior to your infusion. These tests check your blood levels of calcium and vitamin D, as well as your kidney function, which are important for bone health and the safe administration of the medication.

We offer two convenient ways to get these labs done:

  • At-Home Lab Collection: One of our skilled nurses can visit you at home to draw your blood and will drop the sample off at the hospital lab for you.
  • Independent Lab Visit: You can choose to go to a local patient service center (lab) to have your blood drawn.

Our team will work with you to coordinate the option that best suits your needs.
